Data on the Migration of Women

Women and girls comprise around half (48 percent) of the world’s 258 million international migrants. Decades ago, migration was mostly viewed as an activity undertaken by women. If women figured in migration, they were mainly seen as associational migrants, i.e., they move as part of family migration, accompanying or reuniting with male family members who have preceded them in areas of destination. We have come a long way in appreciating women and girls as actors in the world of migration. An interview with Dr. Marla Asis on the migration of women is now online via the IOM YouTube channel, the GMDAC website and the Portal.
