The heavy downpour last Saturday, 24 August 2019, did not dampen the holding of the 2nd M&D Café for the year. The research team of Dr. Chiho Ogaya of Ferris University, Dr. Megumi Hara of Wakayama College, and Dr. Sera Ono, JSPS post-doctoral fellow, shared their findings based on their two-year study on the experiences, processes and activities of NGOs providing support to women and children in the Philippines-Japan migration corridor. The team cooperated with three Philippines-based NGOs—Development Action for Women Network (DAWN), Batis Center for Women, and Maligaya House-JFC Network— which have been supporting women migrants and Japanese Filipino children in the past 2-3 decades. Their findings point to changing roles and contributions of these support NGOs, and the transformation of former migrant women from victims to survivors to advocates. Participants from the Batis Center for Women, Maligaya House-JFC Network, the Kopino Children’s Association Inc., Ateneo de Manila University (Psychology Department and Chinese Studies Center), University of the Philippines (Sociology Department, Political Science Department, Korea Research Center, Asian Center and CIFAL), and colleagues of the research team enlivened the dialogue and sharing.
