The Scalabrini Migration Center and the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, in collaboration with the National Economic Development Authority, the OECD Development Center and the European Commission, launched the report, Interrelations between Public Policies, Migration and Development in the Philippines, on June 14, 2017 at the Discovery Suites, Ortigas Center. The Philippines was part of a 10-country research project which examined the interrelations between public policies, migration and development (IPPMD), which was coordinated by the OECD Development Centre and co-funded by the European Union. Based on four years of fieldwork, empirical analysis and policy dialogues with key stakeholders, the study concludes that while migration can contribute to development, policymakers need to strive towards a more coherent policy agenda. Key findings and recommendations from the Philippine and comparative reports were presented by Maruja Asis. Reynaldo Cancio of the National Economic Development Authority, Levinson Alcantara of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, Pia Roman-Tayag of Bangkok Sentral ng Pilipinas, Jerry Clavecillas of the Department of Trade and Industry, and Arce Fajardo of the Department of the Interior and Local Government shared how the existing thrusts or future plans of their respective agencies respond to or may be informed by the study’s findings and policy recommendations. Stella Go of the Philippine Migration Research Network noted that the recommendations provide guidance for realizing the development goals of AmBisyon Natin 2040. In their closing remarks, Maria Regina Angela Galias of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas and Jorge Tigno of the University of the Philippines called for continuing conversations of various stakeholders to make the most out of migration for all Filipinos.
