Hearts Apart: Migration in the Eyes of Filipino Children. Quezon City: ECMI-CBCP/AOS-MANILA/SMC/OWWA, 2004.
This publication presents the results of a 2003 nationwide research study on the impact of international labor migration on young children and families left behind. Based on the survey, the study finds that parental absence creates displacements, disruptions and changes in caregiving arrangements. In terms of socioeconomic variables, the children of migrants are markedly better off compared to the children of nonmigrants. The cradle of the extended family system provides the children of migrants with care and socialization which are not that different from what children of nonmigrants receive.
