Last Saturday, the M&D Cafe featured two presentations. Ms. Loresel Abainza, visiting researcher from the Institute of Development Policy, University of Antwerp, shared her research on the different individual, household, and community factors that affect the return of migrants from Andean Ecuador. The results of her study showed that return migration is mainly prompted by family reasons and suggested the scope of government programs in supporting reintegration. Dr. Jocelyn Celero, a faculty member of the Asian Center, University of the Philippines, talked about Japanese Filipino children’s economic and social mobility through the concept of diskarte. Social mobility opportunities differed for the 1.5 and second generation Japanese Filipinos, depending on whether they are worker-citizens, dual nationals and expat-cosmopolitans.
