Migration Conversations with Migration Rhythms

March 28 2025

On March 27, SMC and Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) Migration Centre co-organized a research forum to share key findings from the MigrationRhythms project and the launch of “Tita Nurse,” an animation and comic.

Dr. Marta Bivand Erdal and Dr. Karen Anne S. Liao, principal investigator and Manila study lead researcher, respectively, shared key findings from the Manila study of MigrationRhythms. The project explores the links between migration and upward social mobility among the growing middle classes in four Asian cities: Karachi, Mumbai, Hanoi, and Manila.

Dr. Liao also shared the making of the animation and comic, “Tita Nurse,” created in collaboration with PositiveNegatives and Renren Galeno, based on the findings of the Manila study. You can view “Tita Nurse” and the other animations from MigrationRhythms at https://positivenegatives.org/story/migration-rhythms/.

The event culminated with an open forum and exchange with partners and colleagues from Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), Asian Development Bank, Columban Missionaries, Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), De La Salle University (DLSU), Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA), Philippine Association of Service Exporters Inc.
