On June 20, the Scalabrini Migration Center hosted the presentation of Kevin Tan, PhD candidate, Department of Economics, SOAS University of London. His presentation titled “Uneven Reorganization of Social Reproduction in the Philippines and Singapore” examined changes in household norms and the overall reorganization of social reproduction in the Philippines and Singapore through the lens of social reproduction theory and dependency theory. Among others, his findings pointed to transnational mothering, older sibling parenting, intergenerational care, and international division of reproductive labour. His study speaks to the broad literature on Filipino migrant domestic workers and their navigation of the capitalist economic order. Dr. Jorge Tigno served as discussant and highlighted the need to consider individual identities and agency in understanding the continuing rise in the migration of Filipino domestic workers.

The event was attended by representatives from the Department of Migrant Workers, Commission on Filipinos Overseas, Philippine Migration Research Network, University of the Philippines, Philippine Association of Service Exporters, Inc., and PRIME Alliance.
