SMC hosted its first forum of the year
February 08 -08 2024
The Scalabrini Migration Center (SMC) held its first research forum this year with the paper presentation of two-visiting researchers from the University of Warsaw in Poland last February 8 at the SMC office.
Dr. Helena Patzer presented her ethnographic research paper, “Long-Distance Care: Filipino-American Engagement in Development Projects at Home.” The paper delves into the ways Filipino-Americans contribute to nation-building despite the physical separation to their home country. Dr. Patzer also explored the concept of migrant activism, the dynamics of long-distance caregiving, and the power dynamics that arise between migrants and those benefiting from their assistance.
Ms. Olga Wanicka discussed her ongoing research, “Vlog as a Component of Migration Infrastructure: The Example of Overseas Filipino Workers in Poland.” Her study investigates the role of vloggers in facilitating the recruitment of Filipino workers to Poland, heir integration into the migration infrastructure that supports Filipino mobility, and the evolving complexity of labor migrants’ needs.
The forum was attended by different stakeholders from the government, the academe and research, and civil society organizations in the Philippines.
