The reports are part of the \u201cThe Future of Work,\nLabour After <em>Laudato S\u00ec<\/em>\u201d initiative, a\nglobal effort to respond to Pope Francis\u2019 second encyclical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nintroductory paper, authored by Donald Kerwin, Executive Director of the Center\nfor Migration Studies of New York (CMS) examines the moral and ethical\nprinciples that should govern the future of work and international migration.\nTitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cmsny.org\/publications\/kerwin-future-of-work\">International Migration and\nWork: Charting an Ethical Approach to the Future<\/a>,\u201d the paper draws from\nacademic literature, case studies, international law, the recently adopted\nglobal compacts on migrants and refugees, and Catholic social thought. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nScalabrini Migration Center in the Philippines (SMC) reports on two ambitious studies.\nThis first, \u201cOut at Sea, Out of Sight: Southeast Asian Fishermen on Taiwanese\nFishing Vessels,\u201d is based on a series of interviews with migrant fishermen.&nbsp; In the report, SMC identified significant gaps\nin protection and elements of human trafficking. &nbsp;SMC\u2019s second report, entitled \u201cSowing Hope:\nAgriculture as an Alternative to Migration for Young Filipinos?\u201d explores\nprograms that seek to make agriculture a viable career for young adults in the\nPhilippines, who might otherwise emigrate. The report found that Filipinos would\nbe more likely to make agriculture their livelihood, if they viewed it as\nprofitable, well-supported, modern and a socially valuable career. \u201cYoung\npeople are introducing innovations in agriculture in the Philippines,\u201d said Maruja\nM.B. Asis, Executive Director of SMC. \u201cThey are seeds of hope for our future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nScalabrini Institute for Human Mobility in Africa (SIHMA) released an\nexhaustive report about migrants and refugees in Cape Town, South Africa. &nbsp;The report, \u201cLabour-related Experiences of Migrants\nand Refugees in South Africa,\u201d points out that most migrants and refugees\nexperience poverty, exploitation and xenophobic victimization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These reports were first\npresented at the Meeting of ICMC Asia-Oceania Working Group and High-Level\nRegional Conference on the \u201cFuture of Work,\u201d in Bangkok, Thailand in December\n2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;As part of efforts to generate discussions and map out action\nplans toward just policies and good practices, the three centers today\npublished these reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cICMC\nhas been a leader in welcoming, protecting and integrating migrants,\u201d said Mr. Kerwin.\n\u201cTheir vision informed these reports and their support made this important work\npossible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCMS report is now available at <a
